HOW TO USE THE MICROCHIP SCANNER
START
Press the OK button. Press and hold the READ button as you scan the pet. NOTE: The scanner must display ‘READING’.
SCAN
Start at the pet’s head and slowly scan side to side all the way to the tail, making several “S” shaped passes over each area. Slowly scan down the back, neck, chest and legs.
SEARCH
If the scanner beeps and a number appears, this pet is microchipped! Take a cell phone photo or write down the number. Find out the microchip information by visiting www.petmicrochiplookup.org. Call the phone number provided by the website, and they will walk you through the next steps.
CHIP OR NO CHIP?

STEP 1: Look Up the Microchip
Find out where the microchip is registered by visiting PetMicrochipLookup.org and entering the chip number.
Search results will display which company the chip is enrolled with.
Contact the registry with the phone number provided. You’ll provide the pet’s chip number, your contact info, where the pet was found, and other relevant details. The microchip company will attempt to contact the owners on your behalf.
STEP 2: Contact Emmet County Animal Control by calling the non-emergency 911 line.
Immediate options will depend on time of day, officer availability, the pet’s condition, and other factors.
If the pet is found during the hours of 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday, you can bring the pet directly to Little Traverse Bay Humane Society.

If you’ve found a lost pet in Emmet County, please start by completing a Found Pet Report through Little Traverse Bay Humane Society’s Lost & Found Resources page or by contacting our team directly.

Lost & Found Resources: LTBHS Lost & Found ResourcesOur staff will work with you to determine the best next steps for the pet. Depending on the animal’s condition, available space, and time of day, you may be able to temporarily care for the pet while efforts are made to locate the owner, or arrangements may be made for the pet to come to LTBHS.

Post the pet on Petco Love Lost at petcolove.org/lost
Send the pet’s info/photo to Emmet County Lost and Found Pets group on Facebook.
Consider posting the pet’s info on neighborhood apps such as Ring Neighbors, Nextdoor, or Citizen or in local Facebook groups (Emmet County Helping Hands, Petoskey MI Community Chatter, etc.)
